Build a chicken coop. What a great idea. But have you considered the cost involved. As everyone is aware at the moment the economy is going down the toilet and this makes everybody think twice before they commit themselves to doing things they might otherwise have done. So – do you think you can afford to build a chicken coop. You just need to have a look at the price of basic materials at the moment and work from there.

If you have a look around you'll be hard pushed to find chicken coops which are both practical and affordable so the the best idea is for you to build a chicken coop to your own design thus saving you a lot of money.

If you are alright with basic DIY then you should be able to build a chicken coop with no problem at all using some basic materials that you can get from your local supplier.

The roof material that you can use is just standard roof felt which is ideal for the job and quite cheap and again is easy to get from your local DIY outlet.


The most important thing is to make sure that your chicken coop will be dry and warm so you will need some insulating materials - but they are fairly inexpensive and the wood you will need to use will need to be prepared to be used outside. I find that decking boards are really good because they are very strong which is essential for constructing the base and the wire that you use can be attached with staples straight on to the wood.

It really depends on how many chickens you are planning on keeping as to the final cost but for a basic coop with just a couple of chickens it should cost less than $100 or so but if you are planning on keeping many more you will obviously need to make your chicken coop larger and that will add to the cost.

If you are planning on adding extras like automatic feeders or egg collection hatches that will also add to the cost and make the actual building work a bit more difficult.
