Do You Want To Build A Chicken Coop? Don’t Buy One – Build A Chicken Coop and Save Money

In order to build a chicken coop to a reasonable standard you do need to have some basic DIY skills but for the average Joe it should not be too hard a task and when you look around and see the cost of buying a chicken coop off the shelf you will soon realize just how much money you can save yourself. So – do you think you can afford to build a chicken coop. You just need to have a look at the price of basic materials at the moment and work from there.

So what you need to ask yourself is just what do you need to build a chicken coop. It’s very hard to put your finger on exactly what you will require as there are many different styles that you can make but as a rule of thumb here are the basics that you will need for the most part:

Two by fours;
Concrete cinder blocks;
Chicken wire or fence wire;
Insulation strips;
Nails, Screws;
Basic tools for the job;

So what we need to do is try to work the costing and get it made as inexpensively as possible.

You probably don’t to be chopping wood all day so, depending on the wood quality the two by fours are going to cost you roughly $15 - $25. You are not going to want your new construction to fall to bits so I would recommend that you go for a good maple which will set you back about $20, but the final choice is yours.

Luckily the insulation strips will not be quite as expensive and you will be able to get a package of about 16 strips for around the $10 mark. Make sure that it is good quality insulation because chickens definitely do NOT like the damp. The cold is not too much of a problem for them but you will still need some kind of insulation.

Cinder blocks shouldn’t set you back more that around $5 each. It’s worth looking round online or if you have somewhere like Home Depot near your home have a drive over so you can take a look and compare prices. As you want your coop to look nice I would suggest buying blocks that are attractive to look at.

The chicken wire you can get from Craft Supplies and will cost you around $11 and it obviously depends on how big your coop is going to be how many rolls you’ll need to buy. As for the sundry items such screws, nails, etc the cost of those is next to nothing and the tools you’ll probably have anyway.

So all in all it’s probably going to cost you around the $200 mark to make a good chicken coop but the final total obviously depends on the size of your finished construction.
